Cornwall Branch Celtic League letter sent to West Briton newspaper.

Dear Editor
I refer to Candy Atherton's letter of 11th September, 2014 published in the West Briton newspaper.
In this, she mentions the appalling financial state of public services in Cornwall including the police, NHS and Cornwall Council all of which face enormous cutbacks and then condemns current MPs writing newspaper columns in 'cheery' tones.
Ms. Atherton suggests that these MPs are 'fiddling while Cornwall burns.'
Whilst agreeing with her criticisms and accepting that the people of Cornwall are treated as second class citizens with increasingly failing services, we would take this opportunity to remind her that more and more in Cornwall remember clearly the last Labour Government with its broken promises and unnecessary, legally dubious wars and even downright lies (remember those Weapons of Mass Destruction or rather their absence, Ms. Atherton?) costing the lives of so very many for no good end result.
It is not only the London based political parties which have badly let Cornwall down, it is the whole discredited system of Westminster Government, where politicians continue to line their own pockets following dubious expenses claims. This will continue to be the case until there is a root and branch reform of the distant and uncaring Westminster Parliament and better, devolved governance put in place for Cornwall.
Whatever the result of the Scottish Referendum, things will never be the same again and Scotland will rightfully gain what is hers. This has not been achieved by the people of Scotland being content with humbly gathering crumbs from the floor beneath the Westminster table but by sitting at the table and making demands.
The only way forward for Cornwall is for the people to be allowed to run their own affairs. After all, historically, we were here long before a Westminster Parliament was ever heard of and as a people are certainly more mature than the disgraceful institution that is the laughingly entitled 'Mother of Parliaments'.
Westminster has let Cornwall down. As with Scotland, it is time for a change. It is time for a Cornish legislative assembly. As is the case in Scotland, Wales, the Isle of Man, the Channel Islands, the North of Ireland and elsewhere, it is the only way.
Yours faithfully
Asst. Convener
